Here's what's been happening:
August 2013: Allyson started Kindergarten.
September 2013: My grandmother had a massive stroke. She didn't die, but she also refused to do any therapy so to this day she's still in a nursing home, languishing. It's really sad and I might discuss it further someday. But she basically went from having a full life to a sudden stop.
October 2013, a week to the day after my grandmother's stroke: Ben's mom was involved in a car accident. Allyson was in the car with her. Neither of them were seriously hurt, but her car was a total loss. We are very thankful and blessed.
May 2014: I was elected PTA secretary for the 2014-15 school year.
July 2014: Ben and his grandmother shared one final birthday together, on July 4. She passed away July 9. He turned 36, I turned 35, Allyson turned six. (Yes, all in July.)
August 2014: Allyson started first grade.
September 2014: We brought home a puppy! His name is Franklin, and he is a rat terrier/yorkie mix. He's adorable and weird.
October 2014: I joined Weight Watchers. Give or take some holiday weight gain, I've lost around 25 pounds.
November 2014: We learned that Allyson is having trouble with her fine motors. She started occupational therapy at school once a week and it's helping tremendously already (even though her handwriting's still terrible).
January 2015: I dusted off my blog.
So what do I hope to accomplish this year? Well:
- Keep losing weight
- Complain less (LOL)
- Learn how to use my grandma's sewing machine (we sold her house last year and I was the only one remotely interested in the thing)
- Stop being so hard on myself
- Read more books. Right now I'm about halfway through Egghead, or You Can't Survive on Ideas Alone by Bo Burnham. If you've ever heard him or his standup, you know he's all at once vulgar and vulnerable and romantic and kind of a sociopath. I've really been digging his stuff lately and was very excited to find he'd written a book of poetry. It's just like his standup - some of it's really sweet, some of it's really vulgar. But I am loving it so far.
And now, lunch.
